Book 2 Post 2

So the book I chose to read was Feel Good Productivity: How to Do More of What Matters to You by Ali Abdaal. The reason I chose this book is because I want to be more productive as many times I feel as the things I do provide no value to me and I put aside the things that will actually benefit me. There were many things I hoped to get out of this book, but what I was looking forward to the most was a way to change the way I approach the things I do and how to pick what I should really focus on.

So I got a lot of information from my reading of this book. I have learned facts about productivity and how people approach it differently from studies and experiences cited in the book. The book was an easy read and I think it was very well organized in the way it conveys information. One of my favorite quotes from this book was “ Confession: I used to be addicted to World of Warcraft”. This quote just threw me off because I used to love playing this game growing up and I just really resonated with Abdaal’s reasons for loving the game so much.

So my three big takeaways from this book go as follows. First off, having a positive mindset plays a big role in how we approach problems. I never noticed myself however when you are feeling good, challenges feel less like a problem and more like a way of learning for me. There is less frustration in the process and I feel more optimistic about overcoming the challenges thrown at me. Second, the book mentions people having different “play personalities” which helped me realize what types of personalities I resonate with and could help me learn more about myself. I happen to fall in line with the “Competitor” and “Collector” personalities. As a competitor I find myself putting more effort and being more productive in tasks that I can prove that I did better than others. Lastly, I liked learning about the “Shoshin” which is a Zen Buddhism concept meaning Beginner’s Mind. This Shoshin refers to approaching problems or challenges from the perspective of a beginner because many times we are stuck on one way of thinking, so having a beginner’s mind allows us to readjust and create new ways of thinking for ourselves.

  1. Hey Alexis, I really liked your post! I thought it was cool how you analyzed your own personality to better apply the knowledge you have learned from the book!
