World We Dare to Imagine, Part 3
NewMinds
Developing the minds of underserved students
WHAT WE WANT TO SOLVE
The main problem I am looking to solve with my organization is inequity in educational resources for underserved low-income students. First generation low income students like myself, often find themselves lost when it comes to things related to college such as the FAFSA or the importance of the PSAT/SAT for college admissions. Even when these resources are given to them, they are often far too late in their high school career to be of use to them. In my case, I was unaware of the benefits of scoring well on the PSAT until after I had taken my two attempts.
WHAT MAKES US UNIQUE?
I want to create learning centers within each school district of Los Angeles. These centers would be free of charge and catered to 1st years in high school so that we can help them as soon as possible. There are three main points to these learning centers that I believe differentiate us from other resources out there:
1. Ease of Accessibility: I want these learning centers to be accessible to as many students as possible. So we plan to put these learning centers in areas that are accessible to the community, preferably near high schools. Furthermore, our organization wants these learning centers to be financially accessible, so we will look for local partnerships and colleges to support our ideal of making these learning centers free of charge to students.
2. Top Tier Talent: I want to be able to draw the best educational talents such as tutors or teachers to help these students prepare for classes, standardized tests and admission cycles. Additionally, many of these kids do not have the professional connections that other students have so I want there to be a network where they can start early and reach out to professionals in industries they care about from finance to law or any other industry they would like to learn about.
3. Exceptional Equipment: I want these students to have access to new technology. Often I found the resources afforded to these underprivileged students were outdated leftovers. I want them to have the best equipment for them to succeed. Additionally, I want there to be technological resources for the students to pursue any extracurricular activities they have in mind. It can be a struggle for first generation or low income students to be able to not only find extracurricular activities but there is often a financial burden associated with these extracurricular activities that they cannot afford to pay. We want to remove these barriers so that they can find things that they enjoy and can use to compete with their peers.
WHY INVEST?
Altogether, I present our organization, NewMinds, to Anima Mundi Development Partners as a unique tool that ensures an equitable future for the underserved children of Los Angeles. NewMinds looks for the full support of AMDP, so that we can attack the problems we have laid out head on. Bringing together our community and providing an enriching environment for these students.
