My Random Post

Did anyone see the NBA Dunk Contest over the weekend? I watch the All-Star weekend every year and this year may have pushed me away from it until they improve it. It was the most unimpressive dunk contest I have ever witnessed. My first complaint is the line-up. Jaylen Brown, Mac McClung, Jaime Jaquez Jr., and Jacob Toppin. They had 2 g-league players and a guy that can't dribble with his left (Jaylen Brown).

Now onto the dunks. Jaime Jaquez Jr. dunked over Shaquille O'Neal but pushed off of him, so not too crazy. Then he did a dunk... with a hat on... that was it. This dunk bewildered me at how uncreative and weak it was. Toppin had a better dunk with a reverse jumping over someone. Jaylen Brown was astounding, it was astounding how uncreative his dunks were (I'm a Celtics fan). First he dunked with a white glove on his left hand, that was the whole dunk. After he proceeded to jump over a 5'4 man... that was sitting in a chair. Mac McClung the only one who had good dunks, he completely dunked over Shaq who is 7'1" and had some other creative dunks worthy of the dunk contest.

Lastly, the judges were abysmal. This was the first year that I heard boos from the crowd after every score was shown. The judges seemed to have an agenda to not have the 2 g-league players be in the final round of the dunk contest. They gave Jaylen Brown undeserving scores to push him to the final round.

Overall, I will not be watching the dunk contest next year or the year after until they find a way to innovate and make it exciting like it used to be.

  1. I think you have reasonable complaints against the dunk contest. I've heard that it had dropped in quality for a few years. The most memorable one that I hear people talking about is the 2016 Dunk Contest where Zach Lavine and Aaron Gordon put on a show. Hopefully the rest of the All Star weekend was good to watch. I didn't tune in but I think Giannis won over Lebron which was a surprise to me, especially considering how dominant Lebron's teams have been in this new format.

  2. Hey Alexis. I tuned into the dunk contest as well. I agree with your thoughts, as the dunks just didn't excite me. Even on the broadcast they entirely missed the live recording of Jaylen Browns dunk. Hopefully it's better in the future.

  3. Hi Alexis, I have never watched the all-star game or watched the dunk contest, but after reading this, I am glad I didn't. Hopefully they turn it around next year!
